Why the international numbers tell a different story
Norway spent decades outside the game’s biggest stages — no World Cup or European Championship appearance for most of Erling Haaland’s career — so a large share of his international minutes have come in qualifiers and friendlies rather than knockout tournament football. That’s a very different sample from a player representing one of the sport’s traditional heavyweights, and it’s the single biggest reason his tournament trophy count looks the way it does above, independent of how well he has actually played for his country.
Kylian Mbappé debuted for France at 18 in 2017 and was a first-choice starter within a year. He was part of the squad that won the 2018 World Cup at 19, scoring in the final and becoming the youngest player to do so in a World Cup final since Pelé. Four years later he was the tournament’s top scorer and scored a hat-trick in the 2022 final, and he has continued as a first-choice starter into subsequent major tournaments. That level of sustained tournament exposure explains most of the trophy gap between the two — it reflects the stage each has played on more than a gap in ability.
Worth reading the per-game ratios with some caution here too: international careers involve far fewer matches than a club season, so a handful of goals in either direction swings a goals-per-game figure much more than it would over a full club campaign.
For Norway, Erling Haaland has 62 goals in 57 caps. For France, Kylian Mbappé has 66 in 106. International honours are where the two diverge most: 0 to 2.
